Ann Tanner - Trustee

SVA Chairman & Museum Curator

I was MD of our family company, we manufactured milk for major supermarkets and distributed frozen foods to local authorities. I believe that all individuals should reach their full potential. The company gained Investors in People.My voluntary positions included Non Executive Director and Vice Chairman of Essex Training and Enterprise Council, a National Training Awards Judge, a member of a Government FEFC Committee for Widening Participation in Further Education and a Non Executive Director of our Local Authority Enterprise Group. Following retirement and time abroad my husband and I now live in Sidmouth. I volunteered for the Museum in 2016, became Museum Curator in 2019 and SVA Chairman in 2023.

After varied careers in law and finance, my wife and I ended up in Sidmouth quite unintentionally but soon found ourselves unable to leave. We were formerly active members of various Wildlife Trusts, so I am delighted to be a part of the SVA.

Museum Walks, Talks and Publications

I am a retired consultant neurologist and have lived in Sidmouth since 2006. I have helped in the Museum, which includes being one of the town walk leaders, giving talks and writing articles about the town, since 2010 and was Museum Curator from 2015 to 2019. I am a Trustee on the Management committee.

Val Huntington - Trustee

Publicity Officer, Magazine Editor

I moved to Sidmouth from Warwickshire in 2004, having spent many holidays with my parents in law who lived here. My early career was in research of vegetable diseases. After having children, I returned to work in the retail side of horticultural and then most recently, for a large international charity. I joined the SVA as I have a keen interest in the ecology and conservation of this beautiful valley. My hobbies (not surprisingly!) are gardening, gig rowing and walking the many wonderful footpaths in the vale.

Alan Clarke - Trustee

As an Electrical and Electronic Engineer, I worked in Information Techology for 36 years with an international energy firm. I was mainly based in London, but had a spell living and working in the Netherlands. We moved to Sidmouth in 2017 on my retirement, wishing to live by the sea and drawn by this beautiful East Devon town and its countryside. My other interests include being a member of the Rotary Club of Sidmouth and on the organising team of the Sidmouth Science Festival. I am also an active member of the Sidmouth Parish Church. I enjoy gardening and walking.

I've had the good fortune to live in Sidmouth since 1984. Originally from London, my management work in dairy manufacturing brought me to this lovely town, where my wife and I have raised our family. Later in my career I qualified in HR management and have advised various organisations.Since retiring in 2020 I’ve been doing ground maintenance in the good company of the SVA working party at The Knapp. As Volunteers Co-ordinator, I am supporting our activity leaders and maintaining the records of SVA volunteers. I'm a keen walker, both locally and wherever there are mountains, and I enjoy gardening.

Philip Wragg - Trustee

Conservation & Planning

I have a long association with Sidmouth with family connections going back to the 1950s.My personal interests are supporting the protection and conservation of the built and natural environment through local amenity groups. I commented on the last 2013 – 2031 East Devon Local Plan.I coordinate the Planning Group of the SVA, commenting on individual Town Planning and Tree Works applications in the Sid Valley. Separately our Group have recently commented on the new proposed Draft Local Plan to East Devon District Council – the strategic planning policies for the area.I live and work in the town as a Chartered Surveyor. I am married and pastimes include dog walking, rugby, vegetable gardening and croquet.

Gary Cross - Trustee

Website and IT support

I moved to Sidmouth from the Surrey Hills area in 2017, the hilly landscape and woodland feeling very familiar with the added attraction of it being a seaside town. My background is in Electronics R&D, with EMI Research, Plessey and British Aerospace. I was a founding member and director of a small software company serving the Finance sector for 20 years and retired in 2013.My favourite pastime is walking and I initially joined the SVA for the Countryside Walks. I look after admin of the website and also help with various SVA IT projects such as the TV displays for the museum.

Phil Bradbury

I have lived and worked in Devon since moving here in 1973 and in Sidford for nine years and now in retirement have an organic farm in the Sid Valley with a flock of rare breed sheep and two horses which keep me very busy.
I qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in the Geomatics Division, hence my love of mapping and the outdoors. I am life member of the SVA and coordinator for the P3 Parish Paths Partnership and with a group of hardy volunteers help to maintain the 60 miles of public footpaths in the Sid Valley, from those in Sidmouth Town to Putts Corner in the north and beyond Salcombe Regis to the East.
